Air ambulance hit by break down

HAMPSHIRE'S air ambulance was grounded by engine trouble after arriving at the scene of a serious road accident yesterday.

The breakdown prevented the helicopter from collecting the casualty, who had to be taken to hospital by a conventional ambulance.

The accident involved a scooter rider who suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries in an incident with a car on the A35, west of Lyndhurst.

Police said the helicopter was about to fly the casualty to Southampton General Hospital when it was prevented from taking off.

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman said that the malfunction did not affect the patient's condition.
