Children urged to walk to school

CHILDREN in Wiltshire are being encouraged to put their best foot forward and take part in this year's Walk to School Week.

Walk to School Week, which runs from May 19 to 23, is a major national initiative aimed at boosting alternatives to the use of the car on the school run.

In order to promote road safety on the school journey, Wiltshire County Council has provided an information booklet to all primary schools in the county about the health and environment benefits of walking.

For children who live too far away, parents are encouraged to park further from school and walk the last leg of their journey.

Patrick McEune, the council's principle officer for road safety and travel planning, said: "Our schools are doing a great job in encouraging children to walk safely to school. Walk to School Week is a positive reminder to even more children to take the healthy option.

"We hope to see a permanent change in the way Wiltshire travels to school."
